A glass bowl of fruit was already painted on a Roman wall at Pompeii, and fruit is still the plainest way to practice color: it keeps its pose while skin, flesh and shadow each take a mix of their own.

Pineapple painting ideas: spirals, not a grid

A pineapple is many small fruits fused into one, and they sit in two sets of spirals, often 8 one way and 13 the other. So cross two sets of slanted lines instead of ruling squares. Pineapple as stacked zigzags under a fan of leaves skips the pattern altogether. Pineapples, under More filters, holds 16.

Skin, flesh and shadow

The shadow of an object seems to hold a little of its opposite color. Shade a red apple with a touch of green and an orange with a touch of blue, not black: mixed, opposites dull each other toward gray.

  • Kiwi and dragon fruit seeds are dotted with a toothpick; a brush makes them too big.
  • In a bowl, paint the fruit at the back first, then the rim across them.
