How this list was compiled: Own work, written for Draw This Next on 2026-10-09: palettes of three to six colors for a Halloween picture, in four groups (pumpkin orange and black; witch purple and slime green; bone, fog and moonlight; candy brights on black). Every palette, name, color word, hex code and part is our own; none is taken from a film, a show, a game, a costume or candy maker or a published palette. How a strip is ordered: the darkest color first, then the things in the picture, each color named for its part. Our own test for a Halloween palette, not a standard: the first color is the darkest of the strip and has an HSL lightness of 20 percent or less; one other color or more contrasts with it by 4.5 to 1 or more (the WCAG contrast ratio formula, https://www.w3.org/WAI/WCAG21/Understanding/contrast-minimum.html, used as our own threshold); and every strong color (an HSL saturation over 55 percent with a lightness between 30 and 85 percent) has a hue from 15 to 150 degrees (orange through yellow to green) or from 255 to 335 degrees (violet through purple to hot pink), so no strip holds a strong red or a strong blue. The groups: a Pumpkin orange and black strip starts with black or charcoal, holds an orange (a strong color with a hue from 15 to 42 degrees) and no strong green or purple; a Witch purple and slime green strip holds a purple and a green and no orange; a Bone, fog and moonlight strip holds at most one strong color; a Candy brights on black strip starts with black and holds three or more strong colors from two or more of the families orange, yellow, green and purple. No two colors of a palette are closer than 8 in CIE Lab, no two palettes share four codes, and no strip is a shorter strip with colors added. Facts checked on 2026-10-09 against English Wikipedia: Orange (colour) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orange_(colour)): in the United States orange is the color of the carved pumpkins (jack-o'-lanterns) put out for Halloween; Candy corn (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candy_corn): candy corn's traditional colors are yellow, orange and white. One word is one code everywhere on this list. Color names are plain English words with no paint maker, pencil brand or color-matching system. Checked on 2026-10-09: every code is #RRGGBB, each color word fits the hue and lightness of its code, no palette, name or line repeats, and no palette is on another palette list of this site or of its sister sites. The hex codes are for a screen; with paint or pencils, take the nearest color. Licence: own work
How it works
Every palette, or color scheme, passes one test of ours: a near-black dark, one color that stands out on it, and strong colors only from orange through green or from violet through hot pink. No red and no bright blue.

Four pairings
Pumpkin orange and black keeps to black or charcoal and an orange, with yellows, browns or neutrals beside them. Witch purple and slime green holds a purple and a green and never an orange. Bone, fog and moonlight is mostly grays, bone, white and dusty blues, with at most one strong color, such as a single amber lantern. Candy brights on black sets three or more brights on black.
Where each color goes
Every strip starts with its dark and gives each color a part. Candy dish sets candy corn's traditional yellow, orange and white on charcoal.
Questions and answers
What are the Halloween colors?
On this list: black or charcoal for the dark on most strips, orange, purple and green for the color, and bone, gray and white for the light. In the United States orange is the color of the carved pumpkins of Halloween.
What three colors go together for Halloween?
Four strips here hold exactly three. Bat garland is black, pumpkin and cream. Invitation card is black, a lighter orange and cream. Pennant string swaps the cream for bone, and Witch leggings is black, orchid and bright green.
What is the hex code for pumpkin orange?
On this list pumpkin is #E65E0F, a deep orange that leans to red. The lighter orange is #FD8F21, amber is #FDB017 and rust is #A7401B. All four are our own screen colors, not a standard.
Is red a Halloween color?
Not on this list. Our test leaves out strong red and strong blue, so a strip reads as Halloween and not as horror. Red on black has a group of its own on the horror color palette page.
