How it works

A big canvas is filled in one of five ways here: one subject cropped large, a wide sky, flat fields and bands, an oversized flower, or a grid of many small parts. Each idea gives the colors and one step.

Large canvas painting ideas for beginners

The plainest way to fill a big surface is one flat ground and one shape. Crescent moon as tall as the canvas on flat navy is a rolled ground and two coats of cream. Sea horizon dead level at mid-height, two blues only is one taped line.

Blend a wide sky in sections

Acrylic is fast-drying. Sunset in seven wide bands rolled on with a sponge roller lays each band across the width and softens the joins with a damp brush.

Questions and answers

What are some diy large canvas painting ideas with no drawing?

The Abstract fields and bands group. Canvas taped in four, three parts painted, one part bare is tape and three colors, and Two fields meeting at a ragged torn-paper line uses a torn sheet as a mask.

Do huge painting ideas need huge brushes?

Wide tools help. These ideas name a wide flat brush, a sponge roller, a strip of card or tape for the big areas. The Grids of many small parts group goes the other way: small marks repeated until the canvas is full.

What subject suits one big canvas?

One thing, cropped. One pear filling the canvas, its stalk cut by the top edge and Cow's face head-on, wider than the canvas, ears cropped both let the subject run off the edges, so there is no background to fill.
