How it works
Retro style copies the look of the recent past on purpose. These canvases take five looks: mid-century shapes, seventies suns and stripes, diner things, old travel posters and the faded colors of an old photo.

Flat shapes and a short palette
Mid-century design is known for clean, simple lines, and a poster uses few colors. So most of these canvases are flat shapes with hard edges and no shading. Travel poster of a lighthouse in four flat colors paints sky, sea, tower and beam as four shapes. Setting sun as three flat arcs on a dark brown ground is three arcs.
Vintage canvas painting ideas in faded colors
An old print looks pale and warm. Beach scene in washed-out teal, peach and cream gets there by mixing a little cream into every color before it goes on, and Square crop of a sunset with the corners darkened drybrushes thinned brown into the corners.

Questions and answers
Are retro and vintage painting ideas the same?
Nearly. Vintage means a thing that is old; retro means a new thing made to look like it. Every canvas here is retro in that sense: painted now, in the shapes and colors of an earlier time.
What colors look retro?
It depends on the look. The seventies canvases here use brown, rust, orange, mustard and cream. The mid-century ones add teal, olive and coral, and the diner ones use red, black, white and turquoise.
What is an easy retro painting for a beginner?
Easy first canvases holds 19. Rainbow arch in rust, orange, mustard and cream is four arches with a flat brush, and Vinyl record in black with drybrushed grooves, red label is a disc, a dry brush and a dot.
