How it works

A succulent stores water in thick, fleshy leaves or stems, which is why it paints as a few plump shapes. Every cactus is a succulent, though many succulents are not cacti.

Cactus canvas painting ideas, by shape

Three shapes to start from: a column, a globe and a stack of flat pads. Tall column cactus with a round one tucked at its foot paints two of them. The ribs on a stem let it shrink in drought and swell after rain, so shade them as folds. A saguaro may wait 75 years or more for its first arm.

A rosette is rings of leaves

Seen from above, a rosette is a tight bud with rings of pointed leaves around it, each ring wider. On an echeveria the flowers rise on short stalks, as in Rosette sending up one short flower stalk from its leaves.
