How it works
A painting can be 3D in two ways: the paint really stands up from the canvas, or flat paint is shaded so the eye reads depth. These 3D painting ideas hold both kinds and say which is which.

Real depth: raised paint and layers
Impasto is paint laid on thickly enough that the knife or brush strokes stay visible; when it dries, the texture is real. Roses built from curled knife strokes needs only thick paint and a knife. Gel and texture paste build acrylic higher: follow the label. Cut-card clouds raised over a painted sky gets its depth from foam pads.
Painted depth: shadows that trick the eye
Trompe-l'oeil is flat paint made to read as real objects in real space. Goldfish that seems to swim above the canvas is a crisp fish over a soft shadow shifted to one side.

Questions and answers
What is a 3D painting?
A painting with depth you can feel, or depth you only see. Raised paint, layered boards and things set into the paint are real relief; cast shadows and painted holes are illusions on a flat canvas. The list has four groups of 15.
What is the easiest 3D painting idea for a beginner?
Shaded cube, each of its three faces a different blue: three flat faces, light, mid and dark, with sharp edges. For real texture, try Hedgehog with spines pulled up from thick brown paint, each one pulled up with a toothpick.
How do you make paint look raised on a canvas?
Use it thick and leave the tool marks: that is impasto. A palette knife, a comb or the edge of a card shapes it. For more height, artists' gel or texture paste goes on first, used as its label says.
Can I make 3D art with things from around the house?
Yes. The Things set into the paint group uses twine, sand, buttons, cotton, foil, twigs and corrugated card, glued down and painted over. Flowers with real buttons for centers, stems painted needs only buttons, glue and three colors.
