How it works

A black canvas starts with every shadow already painted, so the work is only the light: a moon, a lit window, a neon tube. These 60 black canvas painting ideas each list the colours to put out, the placement and the tool. Black paint is never on the list.

On black you paint only the light

A white canvas makes you paint every shadow. A black one starts finished in the dark, so you add what is lit and stop. Zebra head from the white stripes alone never touches a dark stripe, Tower block drawn only by its lit windows has no building, and Solar eclipse corona in dry-brushed streamers leaves the moon as bare canvas.

White first, then colour

A coloured ground forces more opaque paint, and a thin yellow or pink goes dull on black. Paint the shape white, let it dry, then colour over it, as Jellyfish with a white-first bell does. Neon painting ideas reverse the order: a colour line, a thin white core on top, a dry-brushed haze outside. Keep them as outlines: a filled shape stops reading as a tube.

  • Skip glazing and wet blending at first: none of the 17 easy black canvas painting ideas needs either. Crescent moon and one bright star is a good first one.
  • Sketch in white chalk, since pencil hardly shows on black; a damp cloth lifts it once the paint has dried.
  • No black canvas in the shop? Acrylic gesso is also made with carbon black, or give a white canvas two coats of black acrylic.

Questions and answers

Are glow in the dark painting ideas easy on black?

Yes, but the glow depends on the paint. Glow-in-the-dark paint is phosphorescent: after exposure to light it glows for up to 12 hours, fading as it goes. Use it for small details, as Hidden constellation in glow-in-the-dark paint does. How bright yours is comes down to its label.

Do neon paints glow by themselves?

No. Neon colours are fluorescent pigments, and they glow only while a black light's ultraviolet falls on them; ordinary room light washes the glow out. So the 15 Neon signs designs use a painted trick: white core, colour either side, soft halo. Your initial in true neon red-orange uses the one colour real neon gas makes.

Can a white pen stand in for the brush?

For some designs, yes. Four need white and nothing else, such as White dandelion clock, seeds drifting to a corner, so a white gel pen or paint pen will do. All black painting ideas share one rule: put down the light and leave the dark alone.
