How it works
Fluorescent paint glows only while a blacklight shines on it, and ordinary room light washes the glow out. Each canvas here says which parts go on in ordinary acrylic and which in fluorescent.

Black light painting ideas with a hidden second picture
Fluorescent paint comes in two kinds. The visible kind has a color in daylight that looks brighter under the lamp. The invisible kind looks transparent or pale by day and glows under ultraviolet. The Two pictures in one group uses the second kind: in Unlit birthday cake by day, candle flames by lamp, only the flames are clear UV paint.
Why most of these start on black
Both kinds of fluorescent paint show best against a clean matte black ground. The list under the button also holds Deep sea and space, Splatter, drips and party canvases, and Outlines and line work on black.
- Glow-in-the-dark paint is a different paint: it is phosphorescent and keeps glowing, typically pale green, after the light is gone.
- A filtered blacklight gives off little visible light, only a dim violet glow, so plan the layout in daylight.
Questions and answers
What paint glows under a blacklight?
Fluorescent paint does. Its chemicals absorb the lamp's invisible ultraviolet and give the energy back as visible light of one color. On these lists it is written as neon pink, neon green and so on, or as clear UV paint.
What are some easy blacklight painting ideas?
Splatter burst fanning out from one corner in three neons and Six neon stripes along the top, each left to drip need no drawing. 22 of the 50 canvases are marked Easy, simple shapes, under More filters, Level.
Do I need a black canvas?
Not for every one. The 36 canvases in the other three groups start from an ordinary black coat. The 14 in Two pictures in one are daylight scenes in ordinary colors, with the second picture added in clear UV paint.
Can I see the glow with the room lights on?
Only weakly. The painted surface also reflects ordinary light, which tends to wash out the fluorescent glow, so these canvases are best viewed in a darkened room with the blacklight on.
