How this list was compiled: Own work, written for Draw This Next on 2026-10-01: palettes of five colors in which every color passes one test for cool, except the fifth color of the last group, which is the warm accent. The test is ours: the hue angle of the code on the screen's color circle (HSL, where 120 is green, 180 cyan, 240 blue and 300 magenta) lies from 140 to 290 degrees, that is from a green that leans to blue, through blue, to violet. Grays and near-whites pass because each leans to blue, green or violet; a gray with no lean at all has no hue and is not on the list. The warm accents have a hue from 0 to 50 degrees (red through orange to gold). What warm and cool mean was checked on 2026-10-01 against Wikipedia, Color theory (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_theory, Warm vs. cool colors): warm colors are usually given as the hues red to yellow, with browns and tans, and cool colors the hues blue-green to blue-violet, with most grays; the same section says sources disagree about where the two ends lie. Our range is a little wider than that one at the green end and at the violet end. Every palette, name, color word and hex code is our own, with plain English color words; one word is one code everywhere on the list. The cool colors of each palette run from the darkest to the lightest; in the last group the warm accent comes after them, wherever its lightness falls. The color a line calls the strongest is the one furthest from gray (the largest chroma in CIE Lab). Checked on 2026-10-01: every code is #RRGGBB, no palette and no name repeats, each color word fits its code, the cool colors of each palette are in order of lightness (WCAG relative luminance), no two palettes share four codes, and no palette is on another palette list of this site or of its sister sites, the winter palette list of randomgeneratorhq included. The hex codes are for a screen; with paint or pencils, take the nearest color. Licence: own work

How it works

Each cool palette is five swatches with hex codes. The cool colors pass one test: a hue from blue-leaning green through blue to violet. That range is our own. One group ends on a single warm accent.

Choose a kind of cool

A menu under the button keeps to one group: blues, blue-greens, violets, cool grays or icy pales. The last group is a cool tone color palette with one warm accent, set last on the strip, for a picture that needs a single spot of heat.

Read the strip

Each strip runs from its darkest cool color at the top to its lightest. The line under the name lists the colors in that order. In most groups it also names the strongest color, the one furthest from gray; in the grays, the one that leans furthest to blue, green or violet.

Questions and answers

What are cool colors?

The hues from blue-green to blue-violet, plus most grays, are usually called cool, and those from red to yellow warm. Sources disagree about exactly where the two ends lie.

Is a cold color palette the same as a cool one?

Here, yes. Both mean colors from the blue side of the wheel. For the coldest look, with snow and ice in it, pick the icy pales group from the menu.

Are green and purple cool colors?

It depends on the green and the purple. On this page a green counts when it leans to blue and a purple when it leans to violet; a yellow-green or a red-purple does not. That line is ours.

Why does one group have a warm color?

One group ends on a single warm accent, such as orange, coral or gold, placed last on the strip. The other four colors still pass the cool test, and the line under the name says which color is the warm one.
