How it works

These finger painting ideas for adults trade the brush for a fingertip in a thin disposable glove: a dab for blossom, the side of a finger for a sky, a sweep for a petal. None is a handprint picture.

Gloves first

Thin disposable gloves go on before the paint comes out: that is this page's own choice. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission's Art and Craft Safety Guide says never to use materials in unintended ways, with standard paint for skin-painting as its example, and to wash hands after using materials.

Three marks cover most of the list

A dab is the fingertip pressed and lifted: Mimosa sprig in yellow dots. A blend is the side of the forefinger rubbed along a join: Sunset sky rubbed smooth in three bands. A sweep is the pad pulled and lifted: Tulips, each petal one upward sweep.

Questions and answers

Can adults finger paint on canvas?

Yes. Acrylic on canvas takes dabs, rubbed blends and swept strokes from a gloved fingertip. All 60 ideas here are whole pictures, from Heather moor in dabs of purple and rust to abstract ridges and swirls.

What is an easy finger painting idea for adults?

Spiral from the center out in two colors: put both colors down and circle outward with one fingertip without lifting. Sunset sky rubbed smooth in three bands is the easiest sky. 20 carry the easy mark.

Do I use finger paint or acrylic?

Either. Fingerpaint is paint made to be put on with the fingers. The palettes here are written for acrylic on canvas or card, worked in gloves.

How is this different from finger painting with children?

No handprints or footprints. The children's list is fingerprints, handprints and footprints made into pictures and keepsakes. This one is landscapes, flowers, water and abstracts built from dabs, blends and sweeps.
