How it works
A sponge makes five useful marks: a blended sky, a dabbed leaf, a stamped shape, a rough texture and a soft edge around a mask. These sponge painting ideas on canvas are sorted by which one they use.

Which sponge, which move
A torn kitchen sponge dabbed gives leaves and cloud: Cherry tree with blossom dabbed pale pink over dark pink. A damp sponge dragged blends: Sea dragged from navy at the top to aqua at the shore. A shape cut from a flat sponge stamps: Row of tulips stamped from a zigzag-topped sponge.
Over a mask
Tape, a paper cutout or a length of string laid on the canvas keeps the paint off that shape. Dab over its edge, lift it, and the shape is left: Loops of string dabbed over, then pulled away.
