How this list was compiled: Own work, written for Draw This Next on 2026-10-14: palettes of five colors for a sports picture, a kit or a poster, in four kinds (team stripe, track, court, pool). Every palette, name, color word, hex code and part is our own choice; no palette is the colors of a team, a league, a club, a school, a country, an event or a brand, none is named after one, and nothing is sampled from a photograph, a kit or a logo. How a strip is ordered: a Team stripe strip is a kit, the shirt first and the number last; a Track, Court or Pool strip starts with the ground (the track, the floor or the water), and each color after it is named for its part. Our own tests, not a rule of any sport: every strip holds white and two or more strong colors (an HSL saturation of 55 percent or more at a lightness from 18 to 72 percent); a Team stripe strip holds two or three strong colors, white, and nothing else but black, grays and silver, and its number contrasts with its shirt by 4.5 to 1 or more (WCAG contrast ratio, the formula at https://www.w3.org/WAI/WCAG21/Understanding/contrast-minimum.html; 4.5 to 1 is the figure that page gives for text that is not large, used here as our own threshold for a number on a shirt); the water of a Pool strip has a hue from 170 to 222 degrees. The facts in the page copy, checked on 2026-10-14 against English Wikipedia (text under CC BY-SA 4.0): Away colours, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Away_colours (a choice of coloured clothing used in team sports, required to be worn by one team during a game between teams that would otherwise wear the same colours as each other, or similar colours; this change prevents confusion for officials, players and spectators); Tennis ball, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennis_ball (until 1972 tennis balls were white, or sometimes black; yellow balls were introduced in 1972 as these were easier to see on television); Basketball (ball), https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basketball_(ball) (an orange surface with black ribs is the traditional color scheme of basketballs, but they are sold in various colors). The colors of every track, floor, court and pool are our own choice, not a rule or a measurement. Color names are plain English words with no paint maker, pencil brand or color-matching system, and one word is one code everywhere on this list. Checked on 2026-10-14: every code is #RRGGBB, each color word fits the hue and lightness of its code, no palette, name or line repeats, no two palettes share four codes, no two colors of a palette are closer than 8 in CIE Lab, and no palette is on another palette list of this site or of its sister sites. The hex codes are for a screen; with paint, pencils or markers, take the nearest color. Licence: own work

How it works

A sport color palette here is two or more strong colors with white, set on a kit, a track, a court or a pool. No team, league or brand is named or copied.

Team stripe: the shirt first, the number last

A Team stripe strip is a kit: the shirt, its trim, the rest of the kit, then the number, which contrasts with the shirt by 4.5 to 1 or more, the figure W3C gives for ordinary text. Hooped shirt is a forest green #195838 shirt with white hoops and a yellow #FDE321 number.

Track, court and pool

These strips start with the ground: a brick red #A9422D track, a tan hardwood floor, turquoise water. The strong colors are the kit, the ball or the lane ropes. Tip-off keeps the traditional basketball, an orange surface with black ribs.

Questions and answers

What is a good sports color palette?

White plus two or more strong colors. Kits here include forest green #195838 with yellow, navy #102450 with red and gold, crimson with gold, royal blue with amber, and tangerine with navy.

What colors go together for a sports team?

On this list, two or three strong colors with white, black or gray. A second shirt matters too: away colors are worn when two teams would otherwise wear the same or similar colors, so officials, players and spectators can tell the sides apart.

What are some unique sports color schemes?

Lime with teal shoulders and a navy number (Goalkeeper shirt), purple with violet and gold (Collar and cuffs), and a magenta vest with turquoise shorts on a brick red track (Race bib). Each is our own; none is a team's.

What colors are on a tennis court?

Here, terracotta clay, leaf green grass or a blue hard court, with white lines and a yellow #FDE321 ball. Tennis balls were white, or sometimes black, until 1972, when yellow balls were introduced because they were easier to see on television.
