How it works

A practice sheet for drawing heads from different angles, from imagination. Each box names a turn and a tilt, such as three-quarter facing right, looking down, and stays empty for you to fill.

What the sheet deals

Eight turns, from the front round to the back of the head, each looking up, level or looking down: 24 views. A sheet of 6 or 12 boxes never shows one view twice, and a sheet of 24 holds every view once.

Build every head the same way

Start with a ball, a line down the middle of the face and a line across for the brows. Looking down, the cross line sags and more of the top of the head shows. Looking up, it arches.

Questions and answers

Why are there no example heads?

So the angle comes from your head, not from copying. When a box is done, find a photo turned the same way and check the drawing against it.

Can I practise one tilt at a time?

Yes. Switch off Looking up or Looking down and the sheet deals only from the tilts that are left on. Level alone is the easiest start.

How many heads fit on a sheet?

Choose 6, 12 or 24 boxes. Twenty-four small boxes hold all 24 views for quick sketches of the whole head; six large ones leave room for the eyes, nose and mouth.
