Plot of the day

In a crumbling manor during the reading of a will, a child's laughter comes from wherever nobody is looking. Only a retired medium who wants no part of it notices. The rule: leave before the third day, or do not leave. The ending: the witness keeps the rule for life and tells no one.
In a crumbling manor during the reading of a will, a tapping starts, in a rhythm that spells something. Only a grandparent who knows the old story notices. The rule: never be the one at the back. The ending: the last sign is a gentle one, and then nothing, ever again.
In a cabin booked by six old friends for a long weekend, a tune is picked out, badly, by nobody, at midnight. Only a returning grandchild notices. The rule: never be the one who points it out. The ending: the witness keeps the rule for life and tells no one.
At a scout hut on a hill, in a thunderstorm, a child's laughter comes from wherever nobody is looking. Only a hitchhiker nobody quite invited notices. The rule: do not follow the sleepwalker. The ending: the truth comes out, and the dead look better for it.
In a newly converted chapel, first night after moving in, the cold gathers round one person and follows them. Only a radio operator notices. The rule: film everything and never watch it. The ending: the group holds together, which is just what it wanted.
In a block of flats while the lift is out of order, a bell rings, though nobody can find a bell. Only a safety inspector notices. The rule: do not share your food with anyone who asks twice. The ending: the witness stops seeing it, and that is the ending.
In a school after the last bell on the last day of term, the lights hum a tune that someone knows from childhood. Only a light sleeper notices. The rule: never be the last to leave. The ending: the witness stays behind so that the rule is kept.
At a remote research station as the supply plane leaves, a glove turns up that has not been lost yet. Only a grown-up cousin put in charge notices. The rule: check every face against the photograph, every hour. The ending: the group holds together, which is just what it wanted.
On a moor on the night of the first frost, a straw figure appears a little closer each morning. Only a newly arrived district nurse notices. The rule: do not be alone with anyone who arrived after you. The ending: the witness keeps the rule for life and tells no one.
On a moor on the night of the first frost, a figure stands at the edge of every photograph taken. Only a pilot waiting for the weather notices. The rule: never reply to the message. The ending: the witness reports it, and a form for that already exists.
At a lock-keeper's cottage in a week of fog, every animal faces the same direction at dusk. Only a newcomer marrying into the place notices. The rule: never say how many of you there are. The ending: nobody is hurt, and nobody goes back.
In the locked wing of a house inherited from a stranger, a countdown has started on a device nobody brought. Only a gardener told to leave one corner alone notices. The rule: refuse the inheritance, whatever it is. The ending: the truth comes out, and the dead look better for it.
At a roadside inn with one other guest, people have begun to blink in unison. Only a camper on a first trip notices. The rule: never answer a knock that comes from inside. The ending: the witness adapts, and starts enforcing the rule on others.
In an attic sealed by an earlier generation, the power cuts out at the same minute every night. Only a hiker waiting out bad weather notices. The rule: never wear green until the festival is over. The ending: the dead and the living quietly change places.
At a hill farm during lambing, the map no longer matches, and the map is not what changed. Only a ward of the estate, newly of age notices. The rule: do not answer a call you cannot place. The ending: dawn comes, and it does not help.

In a castle sold to pay a debt, on the last night, a tapping starts, in a rhythm that spells something. Only a valuer from an auction house notices. The rule: never look under whatever you are sleeping on. The ending: the rule spreads, and soon everyone follows it unasked.

How this list was compiled: Original list written for Draw This Next, September 2026. Each entry starts with "in", "on" or "at" and is the only part of the plot that names a place or a time. The six groups follow recognised kinds of horror. The folk horror group keeps to the rural setting, isolation and naive outsiders described at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folk_horror, and the Gothic group to the ruined buildings and the past breaking into the present described at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothic_fiction, both checked 2026-09-18. How this list was compiled: Original list written for Draw This Next, September 2026. Each entry is a full clause that follows the setting and a comma, and none names a room, a building or a landscape, so it fits whichever setting was dealt. The entries aim at the dread that comes before the frightening thing, which is what Ann Radcliffe called terror in an essay printed in 1826; her distinction was checked at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horror_and_terror on 2026-09-18. How this list was compiled: Original list written for Draw This Next, September 2026. Each entry follows "The ending:" and speaks only of the witness, the rule and the thing, never of a place, so it closes any plot the other four lists can deal. Dread, not gore: nothing here describes an injury, and no single entry describes harm to a child, an animal or a real person. Licence: own work
How it works
This horror plot generator deals one uneasy plot from 390 entries, such as a voice that joins in whenever anyone hums, noticed only by a night cleaner. Every plot carries a rule that must not be broken.
Read the full guide
Dread first, then the rule
In an essay published in 1826, the Gothic novelist Ann Radcliffe split fear in two: terror is the dread before the thing arrives, horror the revulsion afterwards. These lists are built for terror. No entry describes an injury, and the worst is left for you to write. The rule is the engine: the reader waits for it to break.
Six kinds of horror story in the lists
The lists below are sorted under ghost story, folk horror, Gothic, everyday uncanny, film pitch and campfire tale, 13 entries each. The tool mixes them and cannot filter. To steer, press until a part lands under your heading, then lock it. Folk horror witnesses are outsiders: a census taker, a supply teacher from the city.
Lock the rule and the ending, then reroll the setting. A valley village and an open-plan office tell different stories.
Before drafting, write down the one reason nobody listens to the witness, then make it worse.
Break the rule exactly once, as late as you can, so the reader has something left to dread.
Questions and answers
Which part makes it a horror movie plot generator?
The film pitch group: sealed locations and small casts, such as a remote research station as the supply plane leaves. One entry in six belongs to it, so lock a film pitch setting first and deal the other four parts round it.
Can I use a plot as a horror writing prompt?
Yes. Each plot is one horror prompt in five parts. Start the ten-minute timer and write only the moment the witness first notices, before anyone has broken the rule.
How scary are these horror story ideas?
Unsettling, never graphic. The lists hold no gore and no cruelty, and no witness is a child: each is an adult the others have a reason not to believe, such as a night cleaner or a sceptical surveyor.
How is folk horror different from a ghost story?
Folk horror puts the danger in the village and what it has agreed to do, more than in anything supernatural. One ending here reads: the ritual works, and that is the worst part. A ghost story puts the danger in the dead.
