Products and tools 15

  • A bottle of nail polish with its brush out A small bottle and a tall cap with the brush fixed inside it. Let one drop hang from the bristles.
  • A cracked powder compact A compact is a small case for face powder with a mirror in the lid. Break the powder into a web of cracks.
  • A fan of five brushes held like playing cards Vary the heads: a powder brush is fluffy, full and rounded; a foundation brush is flat with a tapered tip.
  • A kabuki brush standing on its base A makeup brush with a short handle and dense bristles, usually rounded on top like a mushroom cap.
  • A lip gloss wand lifted from its tube Lip gloss gives the lips a glossy shine. Draw a clear tube, the thick liquid inside and a wand with a soft tip.
  • A lipstick worn to a slant A short cylinder for the case and a smaller one rising out of it. Slope the tip one way, as use wears it down.
  • A makeup bag tipped over, spilling five things A zipped pouch on its side. Let a lipstick, a brush, a pencil, a compact and a tube roll out at different angles.
  • A mascara wand beside its tube A thin rod that ends in a small brush, pulled from a narrow tube. Suggest the bristles with dots, not outlines.
  • A mirror ringed with light bulbs A rectangle with round bulbs down both sides and across the top. Put a small reflection of the room in the glass.
  • A powder puff on an open jar of loose powder A powder puff is a soft pad for putting on face powder. Sit it at a tilt and dust a little powder around the jar.
  • An egg-shaped makeup sponge An egg with one pointed end. Stipple the surface with tiny dots so it reads as soft and full of holes.
  • An eyelash curler, side on A hand tool with two looped handles and a curved clamp at the far end. Keep the two curves of the clamp parallel.
  • An eyeliner pencil with its shavings A pencil with a soft dark tip, a small sharpener and one curl of shaved wood beside it.
  • An eyeshadow palette with the lid open A flat case of small pans in rows. Dip the middle of the two colors that get used most.
  • Six lipsticks in a row, light shade to dark Draw the same lipstick six times. Slope each tip a different way and darken the color step by step.

Eye looks and eyeliner 16

  • A block wing with a flat top edge A thick wedge like a small flag, straight along the top and filled solid. Keep the lower edge on the lash line.
  • A cat eye, lined above and below A cat eye has a thicker wing than winged liner and takes in the bottom lash line as well as the top.
  • A classic winged line on an open eye Winged liner follows the top lid and ends in a point about halfway toward the tail of the eyebrow.
  • A cut crease: a sharp arc in the fold of the lid Pale below the fold and dark above it, with a clean curved edge where the two meet.
  • A cut line in two colors A dark line along the lashes with a bright one stacked right above it, the two ending in one shared wing.
  • A double wing with a gap between the two flicks One flick from the upper lash line and one from the lower, with a sliver of bare skin between them.
  • A kohl-rimmed eye, smudged at the edges Kohl is a soft liner that smudges easily. Rim the whole eye, then blur the outer edge with the side of the pencil.
  • A line that floats above the crease Leave the lid bare. Draw one thin arc in the fold above it, following the curve of the eye socket.
  • A lower-lash wing with the top lid bare Leave the upper lid alone. Line under the eye and flick the end down and out.
  • A rainbow across one eyelid Five bands of color from the inner corner to the outer, each one blended into its neighbor.
  • A row of dots under the lower lashes Three to five small dots beneath the eye, the largest in the middle. Space them evenly.
  • A smoky eye that fades to nothing Darkest at the lash line, lighter as it climbs, with no hard edge anywhere. Shade in small circles to keep it soft.
  • A tightline that only darkens the lash roots Tight lining sits against the waterline under the upper lashes. Draw no line above them at all.
  • A wing that ends in a tiny heart Follow the upper lashes and finish at the outer corner with a small heart in place of a point. Fill it solid.
  • A wing that forks into two tails At the outer corner the line splits in two, one tail up and one down, like the tail of a swallow.
  • The outline of a wing with bare skin inside Draw a large wing as an empty outline and leave the inside uncolored. The gap is the design.

Looks on a face chart 15

  • A 1920s evening look Smoky eyes, long lashes, a bold lip and rosy cheeks. Kohl liner became popular in that decade.
  • A 1960s look with false lashes False eyelashes were in fashion and so was pale lipstick. Draw the lashes long and separate, top and bottom.
  • A 1980s look in bright color Bright, heavy makeup: strong pink or red blush, dark thick lashes and a light-colored lip.
  • A blank face chart to copy and reuse An oval, two eyes, brows, a hint of a nose and closed lips, all in thin pale line. Leave every part uncolored.
  • A doll look with round pink cheeks Two neat circles of pink on the cheeks, lower lashes drawn as single strokes and a small heart of a mouth.
  • A galaxy look across the eyes and temples Deep blue and purple blended from temple to temple like a mask, with white dots of several sizes for stars.
  • A harlequin pattern of diamonds over one eye A patch of diamonds in two colors from the brow to the cheekbone. Rule the grid first, then fill every other one.
  • A mime in white with black details The mime is the silent figure in whiteface. Add thin black brows, a black line through each eye and a small mouth.
  • A stage look, every feature a size bolder Wide liner, strong brows, a clear edge to the lips and color set high on the cheeks. Nothing is blended away.
  • A whiteface clown White covers the whole face and neck. Add thick brows, a red triangle on each cheek and large red lips.
  • An auguste clown The base is pink, red or tan, not white. The eyes and the mouth are thickly outlined in white.
  • An everyday look that is barely there Soft brows, a little color on the cheeks and a lip one shade deeper than the skin. Use the lightest pressure.
  • Contour and highlight mapped as flat shapes Contour is a shade or two darker: the hollows of the cheeks, the sides of the nose, the temples. Highlight is lighter.
  • Freckles and a band of blush over the nose One soft band of pink across the nose and both cheeks, then freckles dotted unevenly on top.
  • Half the face made up and half left bare Split the chart down the middle. Finish every step on one side and leave the other as plain line.

Lips 14

  • A beauty mark beside a red mouth A beauty mark is a small dark mark on the face. Draw the lips first, then one solid dot above a corner of the mouth.
  • A black lip with a blue highlight Even solid black needs a highlight to look round. Leave a streak on the lower lip and tint it blue.
  • A lip brush drawing the outline of the top lip A thin brush held like a pen. Finish one half of the upper lip and leave the other half bare.
  • A lip drawn just outside its natural line Draw the real lip faintly, then the lipstick shape a little outside it. Let both lines show.
  • A lip stain that fades toward the edges A lip stain is sheer color with no outline. Make it strongest where the lips meet and let it fade outward.
  • A lipstick meeting the lower lip, mid-stroke Press the slanted tip into the lip so the lip dents a little under it. Color only the part it has already passed.
  • A lipstick print on a napkin Two lip shapes with a gap between them, broken by fine upright creases where no color reached the paper.
  • A red lip with a sharp edge Fill it flat and even right up to the line. Make the upper lip slightly darker than the lower.
  • A two-tone lip, dark at the edges and pale in the middle Blend from the outline inward so there is no hard join. Leave the center of both lips lightest.
  • Lip gloss with one white highlight on the lower lip Color the lips, then leave one clean streak of white paper on the lower lip. One highlight is enough.
  • Lip liner alone, before any lipstick Lip liner is a pencil used to outline the lips. Draw the outline only, a little darker than the lip, and leave it empty.
  • Lips reflected in a compact mirror Draw the round mirror first. Only the mouth and the tip of the nose fit inside it.
  • Lips with glitter pressed on Dots of different sizes and a few four-point sparkles, thickest in the middle of the lower lip.
  • The same lips in six shades, as swatches Draw one pair of lips six times in a row and color each differently, pale pink to deep plum. Invent a name for each.

How it works

Makeup gets drawn twice: once as an object, the lipstick or the brush, and once as color on a face. These makeup drawing ideas cover both, with the stroke or the shape to get right in each.

Eyeliner drawing ideas, shape by shape

Thirteen of the eye looks are liner shapes. Draw one open eye lightly in pencil first: an almond, the iris, the fold of the lid above it. Then put the liner on top in ink or a dark pencil.

Draw a face chart once and reuse it

A face chart here is a plain outline of a face, front on, that you make up with colored pencils. Draw one, trace it a few times, and try the clown, the stage look and the three decades on the copies.

Questions and answers

What are easy makeup things to draw?

A lipstick, a mascara wand, a bottle of nail polish or a winged line on one eye. Each is a few plain shapes. Easy, under More filters, holds 21.

How do you draw winged eyeliner?

Draw the eye, then mark a point beyond the outer corner, about halfway toward the tail of the eyebrow. Rule a line from the corner to that point, thicken it into a thin triangle and carry it back along the upper lashes.

How do you draw a lipstick?

Two cylinders: a wide one for the case and a narrower one for the color rising out of it. Cut the top of the color at a slant, round its edge and run one long highlight down the side of the case.

What is the difference between a cat eye and winged eyeliner?

Winged liner follows the top lid and ends in a point. A cat eye looks similar, but its wing is thicker and it takes in the bottom lash line as well as the top.
