How this list was compiled: Own work, written for Draw This Next on 2026-10-14: soft, low-contrast palettes of five colors in four kinds (water, mist, garden, evening). Every palette, name, color word, hex code and part is our own choice; nothing is sampled from a photograph or a painting, and no place, brand or product is named. What counts as peaceful here is our own reading, not a finding about how colors make anyone feel: soft colors at low contrast. How a strip is ordered: each color is named for its part of one small scene, and the name carries two of the colors. Our own tests, not a standard: no color has an HSL saturation over 48 percent or a lightness under 42 percent; in every strip the lightest and the darkest color contrast by less than 4.5 to 1 (WCAG contrast ratio, the formula at https://www.w3.org/WAI/WCAG21/Understanding/contrast-minimum.html; 4.5 to 1 is the contrast that page asks of text that is not large, so no two colors of a strip would pass as ordinary text on each other); a Water strip holds three or more colors of the water (a hue from 165 to 235 degrees); a Mist strip holds three or more near-grays (a saturation of 16 percent or less) and nothing under 55 percent lightness; a Garden strip holds two or more greens (a hue from 65 to 170 degrees); an Evening strip holds a warm dusk color (a hue from 300 degrees around to 50), a blue or violet (200 to 290 degrees) and nothing lighter than 92 percent, so no white. The fact in the page copy, checked on 2026-10-14 against English Wikipedia (text under CC BY-SA 4.0): Peace symbols, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peace_symbols (the dove and olive branch was used symbolically by early Christians and then eventually became a secular peace symbol; the international peace flag in the colours of the rainbow was first used in Italy on a 1961 peace march). The colors of the Olive branch strip are our own. Color names are plain English words with no paint maker, pencil brand or color-matching system, and one word is one code everywhere on this list. Checked on 2026-10-14: every code is #RRGGBB, each color word fits the hue and lightness of its code, no palette, name or line repeats, no two palettes share four codes, no two colors of a palette are closer than 8 in CIE Lab, and no palette is on another palette list of this site or of its sister sites. The hex codes are for a screen; with paint, pencils or markers, take the nearest color. Licence: own work

How it works

A peaceful color palette here is soft color at low contrast: blues, greens and warm grays, nothing dark and nothing strong. That reading is our own, built for a quiet picture.

Soft colors, low contrast

No color is over 48 percent saturation or under 42 percent lightness, and the lightest and darkest of a strip contrast by less than 4.5 to 1, the figure W3C asks of ordinary text. Still pond is soft blue #9BBAD4 water, pale blue, sage #98B08D reeds, blue-green lily pads and an off-white lily.

Water, mist, garden and evening

Water strips hold three or more blues and blue-greens. Mist strips are mostly near-grays: Fog light is pale gray fog around a pale yellow lamp. Garden strips hold two or more greens. Evening strips set a warm dusk color beside a blue or violet and hold no white.

Questions and answers

What colors are in a peaceful color palette?

Soft blues, greens and warm grays first: soft blue #9BBAD4, sage #98B08D, warm gray #A69E96 and pale blue-gray. Around them this list uses oat, sand and cream, with dusty rose, lavender and pale peach in the evening.

What is a subdued color palette?

One with no strong color in it. Every strip here passes that test: nothing has a saturation over 48 percent, so even the denim #6487AF and the olive #839051 sit back.

What color represents peace?

No single color. Wikipedia's article on peace symbols begins with the dove and olive branch, and the international peace flag is in the colors of the rainbow. Olive branch here is olive leaves, an off-white dove and a pale blue sky.

How is a peaceful palette different from a pastel one?

A pastel palette is all pale. A peaceful strip may hold middle colors, such as steel blue #567D9F or fern green #5D9654, and leans on grays.
