Pom pom arts and crafts ideas: glue, thread or dab

Glue builds the animals and the pictures. A blunt needle pushed through the middle of each one strings a garland or a necklace. Pinched in a clothespin, a pom-pom becomes a dabber that prints a soft round dot: sheep, snowflakes, dandelion clocks.

Bought or wound from yarn

Most hints mean the small craft pom-poms sold in bags of mixed sizes. Four ask for a yarn pom-pom, wound around your fingers, tied tightly in the middle and cut. Yarn ones are looser, which is what the hedgehog and the lion need.

  • White glue soaks into the fluff. Use a thick dot and hold the pom-pom still while you count to ten.
  • For printing, less paint is better. A soaked pom-pom prints a blob, a nearly dry one a fuzzy dot.

Questions and answers

What can you make with pom-poms?

Animals such as a bunny, an owl and a seven-pom-pom teddy, pictures such as a gumball machine, garlands, a wreath, prints made with a pom-pom dabber, and things to wear such as a ring or bear ears.

How do you paint with a pom-pom?

Pinch it in a clothespin, dip it lightly in paint and dab. Printing with a pom-pom holds twelve, from sheep and snowfall to two messier ones: tracks rolled around a box lid and splat rings dropped from above.

How do you make a pom-pom from yarn?

Wind yarn around four fingers many times, slide the bundle off, tie a length of yarn very tightly around its middle and cut through all the loops. Trim it round, or leave it shaggy for the lion.

Is it pom-pom or pompom?

Both are used, along with pom-pon and pompon. The word comes from the French pompon, a little ornamental ball of fabric or feathers. This page writes pom-pom.
