How it works

A stone has made half the decisions before you pick up a brush: an oval is a ladybird, a triangle is a shark fin, a dome is a tortoise. Each of these 100 designs names the shape it wants, and 29 are rock painting ideas for adults: finer line work, blended layers or a job in the garden.

What the For adults group holds

The For adults group holds 29 designs, and what they share is patience, not subject: fine pen work in Fern frond in white line, blended layers in Mountain ridges at dusk in five layers, a job to do in House number on a big rock by the gate. Sort your stones first: round, oval, long, tall enough to stand.

Where a painted stone ends up

Garden rock painting ideas, such as Vegetable row markers for the garden bed, stay on your own ground. Leaving stones for strangers is newer: the Kindness Rocks Project began on Cape Cod in 2015. Some parks ban painted rocks, citing leave no trace, so ask whoever looks after the land.

  • Set the eyes low and wide apart: cute rock painting ideas depend on it. The Cute group holds 25, and Curled fox, nose under tail shuts its eyes altogether.
  • Skip the base coat on a lumpy stone: Grumpy rock with heavy eyebrows is two eyes and a frown on bare rock. Funny rock painting ideas number 18.
  • Mandala is Sanskrit for circle, and mandalas are ritual symbols in Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism. The two here are plain rings of dots and copy no sacred design.

Questions and answers

What paint works on rocks?

These designs assume craft acrylic and acrylic paint pens on washed, dry stones. Acrylic is water-based but resists water once dried, and a layer or two takes roughly 10 to 20 minutes, so correct slips at once. We do not test paints or sealers: whether yours lasts outdoors is a question for its label.

Are there Christmas, Halloween and Thanksgiving designs?

Yes, on two groups. Christmas rock painting ideas number 14, such as Candy cane stripes on a long stone and Snowy cabin with lit windows. Halloween rock painting ideas share a group with autumn: 17 designs, from Ghost on a tall pale stone to Corn cob on a long stone and, for Thanksgiving, Thankful stones for the table. For Valentine's Day, try Two lovebirds on a heart-shaped stone.

Which designs suit a beginner?

Rock painting ideas for beginners sit under the Easy group, which holds 40 of the 100. Cotton-bud daisies on bare stone needs no brush, and Taped diagonal dip, half left bare needs one colour.
