How it works

Laid out for school posters and thank-you cards, each of these 52 Veterans Day drawing ideas says where things go on the sheet and which colours to use. None needs a service seal, a weapon or a battle. Deal three, then pick a group.

What belongs on a Veterans Day poster

The Department of Veterans Affairs chooses an official poster each year, and its rules suit a classroom too. No service seals. No cemeteries or grave markers, which belong to Memorial Day. The words Veterans Day, the date and Honoring all who served must appear. Simple designs win, because the poster is also shrunk to a lapel pin of 1 by 1.5 inches.

Veteran drawing ideas for a thank-you card

The day is mainly for thanking living veterans, so draw the person as they are now. A portrait of the veteran you know, as they are today needs only head, shoulders and their usual jacket. The Thank-you cards group holds 21 layouts that leave room for a message. Letter the name large, because a card addressed to one person gets kept.

  • Flag check: 13 stripes, red at the top and the bottom, and a blue corner seven stripes deep. Hung flat on a wall, the stars go top left.
  • Skip the poppy. The VA says poppies are worn on Memorial Day, not on 11 November. A yellow ribbon or a plain star does the job here.
  • Easy holds the things to draw for Veterans Day in ten minutes. A folded flag triangle is one triangle and a scatter of stars.

Questions and answers

Why is there no apostrophe in Veterans Day?

The VA's answer is that the day does not belong to veterans. It is a day for honouring all of them, so the word takes an s and no apostrophe. Veterans Day lettered in stars and stripes, with no apostrophe turns the rule into the design.

Are these veterans drawing ideas suitable for young children?

Yes. The list was written for school use, with no combat and nothing frightening. People in uniform appear as plain shapes, as in Six saluting silhouettes, one for each branch: Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force and Coast Guard. Real uniforms are easy to get wrong, and a silhouette is not.

What are good Veterans Day art ideas for a whole class?

Press once, choose Posters and deal one idea per table. A wall of thank-you notes pinned in the shape of a flag works as a joint piece: each child letters one note. The date is always 11 November, so count back from there.
