How it works
Preppy began as the look of college-preparatory schools in the U.S. Northeast. On a canvas it now means bows, clean stripes, checks and two bright colors side by side, and these ideas keep to that.

Preppy canvas painting ideas built on tape
Stripes and checks carry this look, and both come from masking tape. Taped pink and orange stripes, fat then thin is tape in two widths and paint between. Taped checkerboard in pink and orange squares tapes a grid, paints every other square and fills the gaps after peeling. Acrylic is fast-drying, so the second color can follow the same day.
Words in two colors
Each lettered canvas uses one bright pair: the ground in one color, the letters in the other. PREPPY in block capitals, pink on orange and YES in fat capitals, white on kelly green both paint the ground first and the letters in two coats.

Questions and answers
What colors are preppy?
Pairs of brights with white between them. The palettes here lean on pink with orange, pink with kelly green, and navy with white, plus lilac, mint and lemon for the softer canvases.
What is an easy preppy painting for a beginner?
Easy first canvases holds 20. Big pink bow with two long tails on a white canvas is two loops and a knot, and HI in two huge letters, orange on pink needs two colors and one flat brush.
How do you paint a checkerboard on a canvas?
Tape a grid, paint every other square, peel, then fill the gaps. For a softer look, Sponge-stamped checkerboard in mint and cream stamps the squares with a cut piece of sponge.
How do you paint a bow?
Start with two loops and a knot in one flat color, add two tails, then shade the folds with a deeper mix of the same color. Three small bows in a column: pink, orange and yellow keeps each bow to two triangles and a dot.
