How it works

Dandelion is the French dent de lion, lion's tooth, after the toothed leaves. The pictures follow the plant through its stages: the yellow flower, the white seed head, then the seeds on the wind.

What to paint at each stage

The yellow head is all ray florets: strap petals right to the middle, with no dark center. It stands on a hollow stem, usually leafless, over a flat rosette of leaves and shuts at night, which is the whole of Dandelions closed for the night under a dark blue sky. The seed head is a sphere of single seeds, each under its own white parachute.

Seeds by fork, cotton swab or splatter

Printed and splattered makes most of each puff with a print or a tap. A fork pressed in a ring prints the spokes, a cotton swab dots the tips, and thin white tapped from a loaded brush scatters seeds downwind.

  • Let the ground dry first. Acrylic is water-resistant once dry, so white lines stay white over navy or teal.
  • A seed head closes up in damp air: Seed head folded shut after rain, a white tuft on a stem.

Questions and answers

How do you paint a dandelion seed head?

Dot a small center, then pull thin white lines out from it, all the same length, with a liner brush or the corner of a fan brush. One seed head filling a square canvas, edge to edge is that exercise and nothing else.

What colors do I need for a dandelion painting?

White is in 48 of the 60 palettes, olive in 17 and cadmium yellow in 16. Add one dark ground, navy, teal or slate blue, for the seed heads to show against.

What is the easiest dandelion to paint?

Fork-printed puff: tines pressed in a ring around a center. Dip the back of a plastic fork in white and press it around a dot on a dry navy ground. Easy first dandelions, under More filters, holds 24.

How do you paint dandelion seeds blowing away?

Keep the puff whole on one side and trail the seeds from the other in one curve, large near the puff and small farther off. Each seed is a short line with a small V of hairs on top.
