How this list was compiled: Own work, written for Draw This Next on 2026-10-14: high-contrast palettes of five colors in four kinds (one light in the dark, storm, stage, red and black). Every palette, name, color word, hex code and part is our own choice; nothing is sampled from a painting, a film still or a photograph, and no painter, painting, play, film or character is named. How a strip is ordered: the darkest color first, the one light last, each color named for its part of one small scene; the name carries two of the colors. Our own tests, not a standard: the first color is the darkest of the strip (WCAG relative luminance); three or more of the five are deep (an HSL lightness of 36 percent or less); exactly one color, the last, contrasts with the first by 7 to 1 or more (WCAG contrast ratio, the formula at https://www.w3.org/WAI/WCAG21/Understanding/contrast-minimum.html; the figure is used as our own threshold and the page claims no standard); a One light in the dark strip is four deep colors and the light; a Storm strip holds three or more blue-grays (a hue from 190 to 260 degrees, a saturation of 45 percent or less and a lightness of 55 percent or less); a Stage strip starts at a lightness of 14 percent or less; a Red and black strip starts with black and holds two or more reds (a hue from 340 degrees around to 10). The facts in the page copy, checked on 2026-10-14 against English Wikipedia (text under CC BY-SA 4.0): Chiaroscuro, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiaroscuro (in art, the use of strong contrasts between light and dark, usually bold contrasts affecting a whole composition); Tenebrism, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenebrism (also occasionally called dramatic illumination; a style of painting using especially pronounced chiaroscuro, where there are violent contrasts of light and dark and darkness becomes a dominating feature of the image; the technique was developed to add drama to an image through a spotlight effect). Color names are plain English words with no paint maker, pencil brand or color-matching system, and one word is one code everywhere on this list. Checked on 2026-10-14: every code is #RRGGBB, each color word fits the hue and lightness of its code, no palette, name or line repeats, no two palettes share four codes, no two colors of a palette are closer than 8 in CIE Lab, and no palette is on another palette list of this site or of its sister sites. The hex codes are for a screen; with paint, pencils or markers, take the nearest color. Licence: own work
How it works
A dramatic color palette here is mostly dark, with one light. In art, strong contrast between light and dark is called chiaroscuro; where darkness dominates the picture it is tenebrism, also called dramatic illumination.

The darkest color first, the light last
Three or more of the five colors are deep. In Lightning fork the hills are midnight blue #11152C, the cloud and rain charcoal and slate, and the lightning white #FAF9F5.
Storm, stage, red and black
Storm strips hold three or more dark blues and grays of a heavy sky. Stage strips begin with black or midnight blue and light one thing: footlights, a spotlight, a bare bulb. Red and black strips are black, two or more reds and one light, as in Lacquer box, where a gold #EDBC1D clasp is the only light.
Questions and answers
What colors are in a dramatic color palette?
Deep ones and a single light. Here the darks include black #0B0B0E, midnight blue, navy, charcoal, maroon and forest green; the lights include white, pale yellow #FDF5AF, gold, amber and ice blue.
What makes a color palette dramatic?
Contrast between light and dark. Tenebrism was developed to add drama to an image through a spotlight effect, and a strip with one light among deep colors does the same.
What colors go with red and black?
A second red and one light. Red bow tie is a crimson tie on a black jacket with a white shirt; Steam engine sets red wheels and a maroon buffer beam under a black boiler, with silver steam.
How do I use a dramatic palette in a drawing?
Cover most of the picture with the first, darkest color and shape things in the other deep colors. Keep the light for one small place, a window, a flame or a spotlight, so the eye goes straight to it.
