Elemental Generator

A being of fire, water, earth, air, ice, storm or metal to draw, dealt in six parts.

An elemental of packed snow, rolled like a snowman. It is shaped like a figure with four arms and no legs. It moves by stepping from shadow to shadow. Where it has passed, mushrooms come up in its footprints. At its heart is a small bird that sings from inside. It is calmed by someone sitting down nearby and saying nothing.

Padlock: keep a part. Arrows: change only that part.

How this list was compiled: Original list written for Draw This Next, October 2026. Seven groups: the four elements of antiquity (fire, water, earth, air) and three more (ice, storm, metal). The four kinds of elemental named in the answer on this page (gnomes of earth, undines of water, sylphs of air, salamanders of fire, as Paracelsus described them in the 16th century) were checked on 2026-10-09 against https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elemental. How this list was compiled: Original list written for Draw This Next, October 2026. No elemental on this page is fought: each is calmed by a sound, a gift, a kindness or a quiet thing, and each entry suits a being of any material. The notes are our own advice on the scene. Licence: own work

    How it works

This elemental generator writes one being to draw. Press New elemental for what it is made of, its shape, how it moves, what it leaves behind, what sits at its heart and what calms it.

    Read the full guide

    The element is a material

Read the first part as a material and not a colour. Embers under grey ash, river pebbles and sea fog each want a different mark: orange in the cracks, packed ovals, no outline at all. Build the shape out of that stuff and let its edges behave as the stuff does.

An elemental creature generator with a story in it

The last three parts are the story. The trail is how a village learns it came by. The heart is the one thing in it that is not its element, and the place the eye should land. The calm is how the scene ends.

    • Draw the trail first, as an empty scene, then put the elemental at the far end of it.
    • Keep the heart small and exact. One hard-edged object makes a body of mist or flame read as a body.
    • For the calm, draw both figures at their true sizes: the elemental and whoever brought the gift.

    Questions and answers

    What is an elemental?

A being of a single element. In the 16th century Paracelsus described four kinds: gnomes of earth, undines of water, sylphs of air and salamanders of fire. This page adds ice, storm and metal.

Can it pick one random element?

Yes. The element is the first part, so read it and stop. It is fire, water, earth, air, ice, storm or metal, given as a material such as white-hot coals or sea fog. Press New elemental for another.

Are the elementals from a game, book or film?

No. No published creature is named, and nothing follows the rules of any game. Every entry is original to this site, and the six lists are printed in full under the tool with a drawing note beside each.

    Is it suitable for children?

Yes. No elemental here is fought and nothing is harmed. Each is calmed by something small: a bowl of milk left on a step, a song with no words or a drawing of itself.
