Navy, white, rope tan and one red carry most of this list. The canvases paint the gear of a boat, from anchors, knots and sails to signal flags, buoys and compass roses. Lighthouses have a list of their own.

Signal flags are ready-made designs

Each flag of the international code is a flat pattern with hard edges, so tape does the work. Oscar is red and yellow split on the diagonal. Kilo is a yellow half beside a blue half. Mike is a white X on blue. Signal flag Kilo, a yellow half beside a blue half takes one strip of tape.

The knots are real knots

A reef knot, also called a square knot, binds a rope round something. A bowline makes a fixed loop at a rope's end, and a figure-eight is a stopper. In Reef knot painted large in two rope colors on navy, the two colors let the eye follow each rope over and under.

  • The easy ones sit under More filters, Level: flat shapes.
  • Short slanted dashes along a tan line turn it into twisted rope.

Questions and answers

What colors are nautical colors?

Navy, white and a rope tan, with one red. On this list yellow arrives with the signal flags, and brass yellow with the lanterns, portholes and instruments. Three or four of these on one canvas are enough.

What is an easy nautical painting for beginners?

Navy anchor on white with rope looped through its ring: a straight shank, two curved arms and a rope line. Wide navy and white awning stripes with one stripe in red is tape and three colors.

What do nautical signal flags mean?

Each code flag stands for a letter and also carries a message of its own. Oscar means man overboard, Kilo means I wish to communicate with you, and Charlie means yes.

How many points does a compass rose have?

A full rose has 32, and a simple one shows the eight main directions. North is often marked with a fleur-de-lis. Eight-point compass star in navy on rope tan needs only a ruler and three colors.
