How it works

A phone case is a tall strip with rounded corners and a camera in one corner. These 80 phone case drawing ideas use that shape: round the lens, up the long edge, all over, or on a paper insert.

Read the full guide

Start with the camera

The lens is a dark circle you cannot move, so make it part of the picture. Round the camera holds 16 that do: the yolk of a fried egg, a porthole with a fish looking in, the single eye of a monster. Draw up to the ring and stop.

Use the height

A case is far taller than it is wide. Tall designs run from the bottom edge to the camera: a lighthouse, a rocket on a column of smoke, a tower of ice cream scoops with the top one sliding off. A word works the same way, stacked a letter to a line down one long side.

  • On a plain hard case, draw with a paint pen by an open window, and try it on the inside of the case first.
  • For pencil, colored pencil or watercolor, draw on a card insert, not on the case.
  • Never ink over the lens or the flash.

Questions and answers

What can I draw on my phone case?

Anything that suits a tall strip. Scatter strawberries at every angle, letter one initial inside a wreath of leaves, or run a giraffe's neck from the bottom edge to the camera. Names and words holds 16 for a name, an initial or a single word.

How do you draw on a clear phone case?

Trace the phone on card, mark the camera hole, cut just inside the line and slip the card between the phone and the case, picture facing out. A new card is a new case.

What pens work on a phone case?

A paint pen, also called a paint marker. Its oil-based paint writes on surfaces such as plastic and glass and leaves an opaque line. Shake it before you start and let each color dry before the next goes over it.
