Story ideas to write about a melting snowman

Twenty premises end with the thaw, and none of them is sad. A snowman on a hilltop melts into a trickle and at last sees where the hill goes. Another gives his things away: the scarf to a sparrow's nest, the hat to the scarecrow.

The problem, then the ending

The line under each prompt names both. The problem is small, and most of these snowmen cannot move, so somebody has to help: a child, a dog, a crossing guard.

  • Choose what he is made with. Pebble eyes, a stick arm or a borrowed hat can return at the end.
  • Tell it as the snowman. He sees one yard, and everything in it is news.

Questions and answers

What can I write about a snowman?

Give him one wish he cannot reach alone. A snowman at a bus stop wants to ride. One who was made after the snow stopped wants to see it fall. One wants to learn his own name.

How do you end a story about a snowman?

With what is left behind. In these endings it is a puddle with the sky in it, a pebble smile on the grass, a hat handed to the scarecrow, or a small, lumpy snowman that was not there the night before.

Are these snowman writing prompts for children?

Yes. Nothing is frightening and nobody is hurt. A prompt is a single sentence with its problem and ending underneath, so a young writer has only the middle to fill.
