How it works

Road face, crown and back
The words go where cars pass: Class year wrapped around the boulder at eye level starts on the road face. The crown takes what belongs on top: Graduation cap on the crown, tassel down the road face, or the icing of Birthday cake with icing dripping from the crown.
The school and its colors
Each school sets its own rules for its rock. Where a line says your two school colors, they are yours to fill in; no design names a school, a team or a mascot, and Mascot footprints stomping up and over the rock leaves the animal to you.
Questions and answers
What is a spirit rock?
A prominent local rock that students repaint: often a high school senior class, with class colors, the graduating year or the names of its members. It is also called a senior rock, and the custom may go back to the 1950s or 1960s.
What do you paint on a spirit rock for a birthday?
The name where the road sees it, over a fresh base coat. The Birthdays and shout-outs group holds 12, such as Age in numerals as tall as the rock, a crown on the first.
What paint do you use on a spirit rock?
Whatever the school allows: its rules for the rock come first, and no product is recommended here. Coats build up over the years; one university's rock is said to carry inches of paint after 80 years.
Can the whole senior class fit on one rock?
Every senior's signature in white over one solid coat gives each name a place, and two more designs use a handprint or a thumbprint from every senior.
