How this list was compiled: Own work, written for Draw This Next on 2026-10-09: palettes of five or six colors for one look, sorted by where the colors come from (tie-dye rainbows, earthy van tones, flower-power brights, denim and daisies). Every palette, name, color word, hex code and part is our own choice; nothing is sampled from a photograph, a garment, a poster or a vehicle, and no band, festival, maker or person is named. How a strip is ordered: each color is named for its part; a tie-dye strip runs the way the pattern does, from the center outward or from one end to the other. The name carries two of the colors. Our own tests, not a standard: a tie-dye strip holds four or more strong colors (an HSL saturation over 55 percent, a lightness between 30 and 85) with hues 20 degrees or more apart; an earth strip holds four or more of mustard, rust, terracotta, avocado green, olive, brown, dark brown, maroon, sage green, tan, sand and cream, and at most one bright; a flower-power strip holds four or more strong colors; a denim strip holds a denim color (denim blue, faded blue, pale blue or navy), white, and yellow or butter yellow; no two colors of a palette are closer than 8 in CIE Lab; no two palettes share four codes. The facts in the page copy, checked on 2026-10-09 against English Wikipedia, Tie-dye, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tie-dye (text under CC BY-SA 4.0): the process usually goes like this: fold, twist, pleat or crumple the cloth or garment, then bind it with string or rubber bands and put the dye on; tie-dye today is known for bold patterns in bright, saturated primaries; standard patterns include the spiral, the peace sign, the diamond, the sunburst and the marble effect. Color names are plain English words with no paint maker, pencil brand, fabric maker or color-matching system, and one word is one code everywhere on this list. Checked on 2026-10-09: every code is #RRGGBB, each color word fits the hue and lightness of its code, no palette, name or line repeats, and no palette is on another palette list of this site or of its sister sites. The hex codes are for a screen; with paint, pencils, dye or fabric, take the nearest color. Licence: own work

How it works

A hippie color palette can be loud or quiet: a tie-dye rainbow, or mustard, rust and avocado green on cream. Each strip here is one small thing to draw, such as a bead curtain or a patched pair of jeans.

A hippie colors palette in four looks

The menu under the button keeps to one. Tie-dye rainbows hold four or more strong colors, listed the way the pattern runs, from the center outward or from one end to the other. Earthy van tones are mustard, rust, terracotta, olive and brown with cream. Flower-power brights are for posters, patches and beads. Denim and daisies puts a denim blue with white and a yellow.

Mix the loud and the quiet

For a whole picture, take the ground from an earth strip and the accents from a bright one: a rust van with tie-dye curtains, or denim with one flower-power patch. For subjects, see hippie drawing ideas.
