Three grays from one bottle

Brush and wash thins the ink with water, as ink wash painting uses black ink in different concentrations. Mix a pale, a middle and a dark puddle before the first stroke. Line over a dry wash adds a pen once the gray has dried.

Let the ink move itself

Tilted and dripped tips the paper so a drop runs and forks. Blots and folds presses wet ink in a crease so the two halves mirror. Resist keeps the ink off the paper with wax or tape.

  • Some India inks dry waterproof and some do not. Check the bottle before washing over pen lines.
  • Pull a dip pen toward you. Pushed against the paper, the nib catches and spatters.
