Caps from one shape, continued

  • A mushroom shaded under its cap, with an oval shadow Hatch the underside of the cap and the top of the stalk. Lay a flat oval of shadow on the ground to one side.
  • A mushroom tipped toward you, gills under an oval cap Draw the cap as an oval. Below its near edge, a crescent of gills, and the stalk coming out of that.
  • A mushroom with a dented cap holding one raindrop Dip the top of the dome in the middle. Sit a small drop in the dip and let a second one fall from the rim.
  • A mushroom with a skirt ring round its stalk Draw the cap and stalk. A third of the way down the stalk, add a small frill that droops like a collar.
  • A mushroom with an upturned cap like a blown-out umbrella Curve the cap up at the rim so it makes a shallow bowl. The gills show as lines fanning up the outside.
  • A one-line mushroom: up the stalk, over the cap and down Start at the foot, climb one side of the stalk, loop out over the cap and come back down the other side.
  • A tall mushroom, a thimble of a cap on a long bent stalk Make the stalk five times the height of the cap and bend it near the top. The cap sits there like a thimble.
  • A toadstool with spots in three sizes, largest in the middle Draw a wide dome. Put a few large ovals near the top and smaller ones toward the rim, some cut off by the edge.
  • A young mushroom, its cap still closed round the stalk A round knob on a short thick stalk, with the rim of the cap tucked in and touching the stalk all the way round.

Clusters and rings 15

  • A bunch of mushrooms with their stalks bundled at the base Six long stalks squeezed together at the bottom and spreading at the top, each ending in a small round cap.
  • A circle of mushrooms drawn low, front ones larger Pencil an oval on the ground. Stand mushrooms round it, bigger at the front and smaller at the back.
  • A clump of five caps sharing one foot Five stalks fan out from a single base. Make the middle one tallest and overlap the caps a little.
  • A dozen caps in rows, each half hidden by two in front Start with a front row of three caps. Add rows behind, each cap half hidden by the two in front of it.
  • A file of mushrooms climbing a slope, each a size smaller Rule a slanted ground line. Stand the largest mushroom at the bottom and shrink each one up the hill.
  • A log on its side carrying three well-spaced mushrooms Draw a log as a long tube with a ring on its cut end. Stand three small mushrooms on it, well apart.
  • A mound of mushrooms piled into a hill, smallest on top Draw a pencil dome as a guide. Cover it with caps of all sizes, largest round the bottom, and erase the dome.
  • A pair of mushrooms leaning apart like a V Two stalks rise from one spot and lean away from each other. Each carries a cap tilted outward.
  • A patch of pin mushrooms: tiny dots on hair-thin stalks Draw a dozen hair-thin stalks of different heights, each bent a little. Top each with a cap no bigger than a dot.
  • A row of mushrooms under a twig, caps hanging like bells Draw a level twig. From its underside, stalks curve down and out and end in caps that open downward.
  • A stump crowded with tiny caps round its rim A short stump with rings on top. Pack small domes all round the upper edge, some hanging over the side.
  • A tall mushroom with a half-size one tucked under its rim Draw one wide cap on a tall stalk. Tuck a mushroom half its height beside the stalk, under the rim.
  • A troop of mushrooms winding along a path into the distance Two path lines that narrow up the page. Stand mushrooms along one side, shrinking until they are dots.
  • Shelf mushrooms stepping up a tree trunk like stairs Two upright lines for the trunk. Add half-circle shelves up one side, each a little smaller than the last.
  • Two tall mushrooms with a clump of babies at their feet Draw the two tall ones first. At the base, add five tiny round caps on stalks no longer than the caps.

Houses and characters 15

  • A frog sitting out the rain under a wide cap A tall mushroom with a wide cap. Under it, a frog as a round lump with two eye bumps. Slanted rain outside.
  • A glowing mushroom lamp with rays under its cap Draw the mushroom, then short straight rays fanning down from under the rim and a pool of light on the ground.
  • A grumpy old mushroom with a moss beard and a walking stick Heavy brows under the rim, a scribble of moss for the beard and one stick arm resting on a twig.
  • A ladybug asleep on a cap, its spots matching the cap's A small half circle with a line down its back and three dots, resting among spots of the same size.
  • A mouse asleep in a hammock strung between two mushrooms Tie a sagging curve between two stalks. A round mouse lies in the dip, its tail hanging over the edge.
  • A mushroom carousel: seats hung on strings from the cap rim Draw a wide flat cap on a thick stalk. Hang four small seats from the rim on strings and sit a beetle in one.
  • A mushroom home with a mailbox, a fence and stepping stones Arched door, round window. A path of flat ovals leads to it past a short picket fence and a box on a post.
  • A mushroom house cut open to show a spiral stair inside Remove the front of the stalk. Inside, wind a stair up from the door to a small room under the cap.
  • A mushroom table set with two pebble stools A flat-cap mushroom is the table. Put a small round stone each side for a seat and two tiny cups on top.
  • A parade of five mushroom characters, each with its own cap Line up five on short legs. Give them a dome, a bell, a cone, a flat cap and a funnel, and five different faces.
  • A shy mushroom, its cap pulled low over two eyes Draw the cap so it covers the top third of the stalk. Two dot eyes peep out just under the rim.
  • A snail climbing a mushroom stalk A coiled shell with a soft foot, stuck halfway up the stalk. Two feelers point at the cap above.
  • A two-story mushroom house with a ladder to the top window A door at the foot of the stalk, a window above it and a second window in the cap, reached by a ladder.
  • A walking mushroom on two short legs in round boots Two short lines under the stalk, each ending in a rounded boot. Lift one boot to show it mid-step.
  • An ant carrying a tiny mushroom like a parasol Three small ovals in a row make the ant. It holds the stalk in two front legs, the cap over its head.

Patterns and close-ups 15

  • A cap border: a dome above the rule, a dome below, repeat Unit: one dome above the line and one below it, sharing a stalk drawn across the line. Repeat to the edge.
  • A cap divided into bands of dots, stripes and scales Draw a large dome. Split it into three curved bands and fill each with one small repeating mark.
  • A cap dropping a fine rain of dots Under the cap, on each side of the stalk, let small dots fall in loose columns that thin out lower down.
  • A cap from above: a circle with a dark middle and spots Draw a circle. Shade a small patch at its center, scatter pale ovals round it and tick fine lines at the rim.
  • A cap patterned like cracked glaze, plates with dark gaps Break the surface of the dome into small uneven plates. Ink the gaps between them and leave the plates bare.
  • A cap rim close up, curling over the first gills Draw the edge of the cap as a thick rolled lip. Under it, the gills start as short parallel lines.
  • A cap so close it fills the page, spots like islands Draw only one long curve across the sheet for the cap's edge. Above it, large pale ovals, some cut by the page.
  • A cap striped from peak to rim like a circus tent Draw a bell cap. Rule curved lines from the peak down to the rim and fill every second stripe.
  • A dewdrop on a cap rim holding a tiny upside-down scene Draw one large drop about to fall. Inside it, a tiny mushroom and horizon, upside down and curved.
  • A scaly cap: rows of small ticks, like a thatched roof Draw the dome. Cover it in short curved ticks in rows, each row overlapping the one below, thinner toward the top.
  • A stalk close up: long fibers and a torn ring Fill the page width with the stalk. Run broken lines down it and hang a ragged frill partway up.
  • A swollen stalk base rising out of scallops of moss Draw the foot of the stalk as a bulb. Bank it round with rows of small scallops, darker toward the ground.
  • Cap spots drawn as raised warts with a shadow each Make every spot a small bump. Add a crescent of shade on the same side of each so they stand up.
  • Gills that fork toward the rim to keep the lines close Draw the gills from stalk to rim. Halfway out, split every second one in two so the gaps never widen.
  • The underside of a cap: gills fanning from the stalk Draw the cap from below as a half circle. Rule lines from where the stalk joins out to the rim, like a fan.

How this list was compiled: Original list written for Draw This Next on 2026-10-02: 60 invented mushroom doodles in four kinds (caps from one shape, clusters and rings, houses and characters, patterns and close-ups), each marked easy, medium or hard, with the shapes it is built from and the first strokes to draw. Kept apart from mushroom-drawing-ideas, which draws named species with the feature to get right; this list names no species. No item repeats a title from any other list on the site. Two details of a mushroom were read on Wikipedia on 2026-10-02 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mushroom): the gills under the cap and the ring some mushrooms keep round the stalk. Nothing here helps to identify a mushroom. Licence: own work

How it works

A mushroom doodle is a cap on a stalk: a dome, a bell, a plate or a cone. Each of the 60 here is invented, names its shapes and gives the first strokes.

One cap shape at a time

Change the cap and the mushroom changes: a dome on a stalk that widens at the foot, a bell cap on a slim wavy stalk, a flat cap like a plate on a post.

Then the underside

Gills are lines that fan from the stalk to the rim. Some mushrooms keep a ring round the stalk, drawn as a small drooping frill. Patterns and close-ups has both.

  • Curve the spots with the cap and cut some off at the rim.
  • Draw a cluster from the front mushroom back, so each stalk overlaps the one behind.

Questions and answers

What is the simplest mushroom doodle?

Draw a half circle with a flat underside. Below it, add a stalk that swells toward the ground like a small bottle. That is the first doodle on the list.

What are some cute mushroom doodles?

Houses and characters holds 15, such as A shy mushroom, its cap pulled low over two eyes, A frog sitting out the rain under a wide cap and A walking mushroom on two short legs in round boots.

How is this different from the mushroom drawing ideas?

That list draws named species with the feature to get right. These are invented and name no species, so they cannot help to identify a real mushroom.
