How this list was compiled: Original list written for Draw This Next, September 2026. Each entry is a whole clause (a victim, or a missing thing) with no place in it, so it reads in front of any setting. Entries in the "No body" group are thefts and vanishings with nobody dead; that group comes first so the printed list files all 29 under its own heading, and the other four headings hold the deaths, shootings and poisonings. What the six parts give you
The setting is always closed: a sleeper train stopped by a snowdrift, a hotel on a tidal island, a jury room. That is the closed circle of the classic whodunit: nobody can arrive or leave, so the culprit is one of the people in the room. The sentence says everyone suspects the suspect. It never says they did it.
Four subgenres, mixed on purpose
Each list below is sorted under cosy village mystery, country house whodunit, crime and noir, and thriller and suspense. The tool draws from all four and cannot filter, so a tea room owner can be the suspect at a polar research station. Keep the mismatch as a fish-out-of-water story, or press again until it fits.
Build a cast of four: lock all but suspect and motive, press New plot four times and note each pair.
In a crime story or a cosy, show the real clue early among dull details and the false clue loudly.
Questions and answers
Does it work as a murder mystery plot generator?
Mostly. In 43 of the 72 crimes somebody is found dead, shot or poisoned, from a flower show judge to a stage magician. The other 29 are thefts and vanishings, listed first under No body. Press until your kind of crime lands.
Is this a mystery story generator or only a plot?
It deals the case, not finished prose: the crime, the circle of suspects and two clues. No part names a detective, so give yours a past with the backstory generator and open with a first line.
What is a red herring in a mystery plot?
A false clue that points the reader at the wrong person. Here each one looks damning and is innocent or planted: a monogrammed handkerchief planted at the scene, a bloodstained apron that is beetroot. The real clue is a small fact that contradicts somebody's account.
