Sitcom Plot Generator

One sitcom episode per press: a place, a small goal, a lie or mix-up, a B-story and a reset.

At the only general store on a small island, the lead just wants to look relaxed in front of a visiting parent. Then a claim to love camping is rewarded with a tent. Meanwhile, a fern arrives with four pages of instructions. By the end, everything is back in place a minute before the door opens.

Padlock: keep a part. Arrows: change only that part.

    How it works

This sitcom plot generator deals a whole episode: somebody wants something small, such as returning a sweater without the receipt, a lie or a mix-up makes it enormous, and by the last scene everything is back where it began.

    Read the full guide

    An A-story and a B-story

In screenwriting the main plot is called the A story and a subplot the B story. Here the A-story is the small goal and the lie or mix-up that wrecks it. The B-story is a sillier problem for the rest of the cast. Let the two collide once, at the worst moment for the lead.

Why the ending puts everything back

A sitcom keeps a recurring cast in one consistent setting: a home, a workplace or a community, which is how the places are sorted. The last part returns everyone to where they started, so these episodes stand alone and the same people can want something new next time.

    • Keep the goal small. The comedy is the distance between returning a sweater and what it ends up costing.
    • Time the confession one scene too late, when the lie is no longer needed.

    Questions and answers

    What is a sitcom?

Short for situation comedy: a comedy for radio or television built on a recurring cast of characters in a consistent setting, such as a home, a workplace or a community. The comedy comes from the situations those same people keep landing in.

    What is a B-story in a sitcom?

A subplot: a side story that supports the main plot and often belongs to the supporting characters. Here it is the line after Meanwhile, such as two of the others feuding over a parking space while the lead tells one lie too many.

How do you write a sitcom episode plot?

Give one character a small want, block it with a lie or a misunderstanding, and let every fix make it worse. Run a lighter story beside it, and finish with everyone where they began.

Can I choose a workplace sitcom or a family sitcom?

Not with a filter: the tool mixes all three kinds of place. Twenty are homes, twenty are workplaces and twenty are community spots, all written out in the list below, so press again until a duplex or a bowling alley lands.
