How it works
This soap opera plot generator starts each storyline with someone learning what they should not: the will everyone has read is the second of two, a cousin who writes everything in a diary finds out, and a taxi stops outside.

A secret, the wrong person, the worst moment
A soap runs on who knows what. Each plot hides one thing, about family, money, work or who somebody really is, then hands it to the last person who should have it at the moment it does most damage. Keep the secret and change who learns it: the bank manager and the bride make two different stories.
Why the last part settles nothing
A soap opera is a serial. Its narrative stays open, several storylines run at once, and an episode typically ends on a cliffhanger, so the audience has to come back. The last part here is that ending. Answer it to write the next episode, then deal a second secret to run beside the first.
- Decide who else already knows. A second storyline starts the moment two people are keeping the secret from a third.
- Let the cliffhanger interrupt the finder mid-sentence: the secret is known and still not told.
Questions and answers
Why is it called a soap opera?
The first ones were radio dramas sponsored by soap manufacturers. The name now means a long-running radio or television serial, often marked by melodrama, sentiment and an ensemble cast.
How do you write a soap opera plot?
Start with a secret and the person it would hurt. Let someone else learn it first, delay the telling, and stop each episode before the consequence lands.
What makes a good soap opera cliffhanger?
It changes what the secret means and resolves nothing. The list holds three kinds: someone arrives, something is found, something is said or done. A car nobody recognizes in the driveway works because nobody yet knows who is driving.
Are these soap opera story ideas only about families?
No. A third of the places are families and their businesses, a third are workplaces such as a hospital, and a third are streets and small towns. The tool mixes them and cannot filter, so a newsroom may inherit a family's will.
