Military sci-fi story ideas
Half the list is military science fiction, in a group of its own. A platoon wakes from cold sleep to find the war over. A translator learns that the other side's word for surrender is also its word for visit. An admiral's thinking ships ask for a vote.
By rank, from recruit to general
Four more groups go by the lead's place in the army: Recruits and the ranks, Sergeants and specialists, Officers and command, and Supply, signals and the kitchen. The last holds the stories armies seldom tell: a clerk who keeps the dragon fed, a siege counted in sacks of flour.
- Tell the battle from wherever the soup is made.
- Give the lowest rank the best information. Laundries and mail rooms hear everything.
Questions and answers
What makes great sci-fi military story ideas?
A chain of command under a strain no real army has met. Here a general commands from orbit with a four-minute delay each way, and a sergeant on the surface starts answering the orders before they arrive.
Do the stories have battles?
Battles happen, mostly offstage. No premise turns on a killing or a wound. The trouble is an order, a shortage or a truce: a general asked to lose and make it look real, a paymaster chasing an army that keeps moving.
How do I start a military fantasy story?
With one job, and what makes it hard in this world. A quartermaster must outfit a regiment of centaurs and has only trousers in store. A drummer sets the army's pace and one morning decides to slow it down.
